Black Queens
Through the simplicity of paper, I create art to teach and highlight the complex struggles and authentic beauty of Black people and culture.
Growing up, I didn't see many photos of Black women as Queens, historical, fictional, or in any positions of power. From this lack of representation Dame Dame and Bese Sake were created to display Black women in positions of power with grace and beauty. Using a playing card format, I experimented with highlighting Black beauty through patterns, symbols, and adornments using thread, gold leaf, and painted paper.
